Painting in the studio may not be as fun as painting en plein air, but it is certainly as challenging and rewarding. In this course, we will work from photos to create a landscape painting. Using a systematic approach we’ll start with selecting the optimal reference photos and how to modify the design for a better painting. Preliminary sketches and Notan studies will be made to help us isolate simple shapes and create a solid composition. Linear and atmospheric perspective along with color and value harmonies will be key to our focus. Students are invited to use their medium of choice - oils, acrylics, watercolor, gouache or pastels. Reference material will be provided but please feel free to bring photos that you want to work from.
Painting the Landscape
with Leslie Lienau
LESLIE LIENAU
The art of depicting oneself in a self-portrait dates as far back as ancient Egypt. There is a famous artist throughout every period and within every art movement who has represented themselves in a "selfie". Rembrandt himself made at least 60 portraits of himself over the course of his lifetime. The self-portrait is a time honored practice and is an excellent and affordable approach to learning how to achieve a likeness. In this course, we will study the self-portrait using Conté Crayon, paper and a mirror. Through a step-by-step process, we'll study the fundamentals of portraiture with a strong emphasis on mark making, shadow massing, and comparative and visual measuring. The course will result in a confident and expressive portrait of who? You!
