Open grisaille is a classical painting technique where thin, transparent or semi-transparent layers of a single color are applied to establish tonal values. Starting from a gesture and painting directly from life, we will practice building figures in a variety of poses. All poses will be strongly lit with a clear light side and shadow side. For the open grisaille, we will use only one color, typically a black or a brown. Once the dark masses are in place, we will then wipe out the light areas using a paper towel, thus creating the open grisaille, the initial framework that sets up a painting. Poses will range from 20 minutes to one hour.
