PAINTING ANIMALS FROM PHOTOGRAPHS
with Contemporary Wildlife Artist
HANNAH HARPER

"I have always held an adoration for the natural world and its wild inhabitants. Catching insects and frogs, exploring, and drawing animals were among my favorite childhood pastimes. In my current work, it is my pursuit to portray wildlife as I saw them in my youth, with empathy and whimsy. My hope as a painter is to stir within the viewer a sense of child-like wonder towards wildlife, who possess feelings not dissimilar to our own".
Join Oklahoma wildlife artist Hannah Harper to learn her techniques for creating captivating portrayals of animals and the natural world they inhabit. This 4-week short course will focus on problem-solving obstacles that surface when working from a photo reference, including how to apply knowledge gleaned from painting from life to a photo, how to choose a photo that will be a successful reference rather than a frustrating reference, and best practices in photographing your own wildlife reference. The course will also focus on instructor demonstration and how she takes a wildlife painting from the drawing and problem solving stage to painted completion. Workshop space is limited to 14 artists. Ages 15 and up, all levels welcome. Enrollment closes July 15.

Hannah Harper grew up in the Southern Oklahoma countryside. She was encouraged to pursue creativity at a young age and collected art education from various sources as a child. At 17, she took a workshop with artists John and Terri Moyers at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City who soon after took her under their wing and has mentored her ever since. They encouraged her to take workshops with charcoal master Ned Jacob in both Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming and a semester at the Ryder Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2019 with a BFA in studio art and completed her MFA for painting at the University of Oklahoma in 2023.
Hannah has exhibited in the annual Small Works, Great Wonders exhibition at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and the Western Visions exhibition at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, WY. She is represented by Claggett/Rey Gallery in Colorado, Manitou Galleries in Santa Fe, NM,
