FORM PAINTING: The Open Grisaille

In this 4-week class, we will begin with the first stage of form painting, the open grisaille.  Open grisaille is a classical painting technique where thin, transparent or semi-transparent layers of a single color are applied to establish tonal values.    
Starting from a gesture and painting directly from life, we will practice building figures in a variety of poses. All poses will be strongly lit with a clear light side and shadow side. For the open grisaille, we will use only one color, typically a black or a brown. Once the dark masses are in place, we will then wipe out the light areas using a paper towel, thus creating the open grisaille, the initial framework that sets up a painting. Poses will range from 20 minutes to one hour.

In Part 2, "FORM PAINTING: The Closed Grisaille", artists will move on to the closed grisaille techique, also known as "dead coloring".  Artists must complete The Open Grisaille to move on to the next session.  

Intermediate to Advanced.  Class size limited to 10 artists.

Chris Brizzard started his formal training in drawing and design with Michael Mentler at The Society of Figurative Arts (www.tsofa.com) in 2013. From 2014 to 2017, he studied at Studio Incamminati (www.studioincamminati.org) under instructors trained by Nelson Shanks,  where he studied the open and closed grisaille techniques extensively.
Chris now teaches at The Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art and Edmond Fine Arts in Edmond, OK and at Oklahoma Contemporary in Oklahoma City. He is represented by 1515 Lincoln Gallery in OKC and Terra Rosa Gallery in Guthrie, OK.

When enrolling in any visual arts workshops or classes at Oklahoma Academy of Classical Art, hereinafter, OACA, you hereby confirm that you understand and agree to our Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree to our terms and conditions, please do not enroll in a workshop or class. 

REGISTRATION FEE   
To reserve a place in a OACA workshop or class, students must pay full tuition + non-refundable registration fee.  

CANCELLATION POLICY
  • If OACA cancels a workshop, students will receive a full refund.
  • If a student cancels more than four weeks before the start date, a full refund will be given minus $50 cancellation fee.
  • If a student cancels four weeks or fewer from the start date, no refund will be given.
  • **OACA is not responsible for any fees associated with a student having to cancel or change travel plans, including hotel and flight if OACA cancels a class, workshop or changes its schedule.
  • No refund is given for student absences during the course of the workshop.
  • There are no student make-ups for workshops.
  • Any other refunds are at the discretion of the Administration.

OACA reserves the right to take and use photographs of students and student artworks for the purpose of OACA promotion and publicity.  OACA is not responsible for any lost or stolen articles at any of the venues where classes or workshops are held. OACA does not accept responsibility for any student loss associated with unrecoverable travel costs and/or reservations.
